“Doggerbank Writes Back” is a metaphorical journey to the boundaries of human reach, symbolizing the effort to bring natural history into the realm of human narrative. The work focuses on how we perceive ourselves in relation to more-than-human entities on a bureaucratic level. Through examining established viewing methods rather than seeking new ones, the duo engages in a dialogue with the human-kind, using tools and languages familiar to us. By placing the documents and technical images delineating human definitions and geographic divisions of Doggerbank in both natural environments and photography studios, we make visible their respective scales and materialities in relation to each other. This interplay questions the binary between human articulations and the sea’s inherent expressions, inviting a reevaluation of our engagement with and representation of the natural world. We seek a deeper understanding of our conventional perspectives and question the narratives we’ve built around non-human entities. This inquiry into our linguistic and visual frameworks offers new insights into our relationship with the natural world, emphasizing the need for a deeper comprehension of our own constructs in order to truly imagine beyond them.
